In the first six months of 2022, German cars proved to be the most popular among Luxembourg residents – But the most popular models were a French small car and an Italian car.
German cars remain very popular in Luxembourg. Our colleagues from RTL 5 Minutes spoke with the Luxo-Belgian Auto and Bike Federation (Febiac), and according to registration figures from the National Society of Automobile Traffic (SNCA), five German brands are among the ten most popular manufacturers this year. .
The eternal leader is Volkswagen. Like every year, the German giant is in the lead. To date, it represents more than 11% of registrations. With 2,492 registered cars, VW is ahead of Mercedes (2,070 registrations) and Peugeot (1,884).
Behind them are Audi (1,879), BMW (1,806) and Opel (1,105). These six brands alone account for 11,236 of the 21,812 car registrations during the first six months of the year. Fiat, Skoda, Renault and Citroën complete the top 10.
The most popular cars are…
Despite the power of the German auto industry, the two most popular models of the first half came from elsewhere. One from a French manufacturer and the other from Italy.
Since the beginning of 2022, the Peugeot 208 has been the most popular car registered in Luxembourg. With 809 vehicles, it is well ahead of the Fiat 500 and its 684 units. The third and fourth most popular cars are the Opel Corsa (588 registrations) and the Volkswagen Golf (581 units). Four city cars, four compact cars, which dominate the market, even if Luxembourgers remain very fond of sedans and SUVs.
Opel’s new Mokka completes the top 5. It is followed by the Citroën C3.
The heavyweights of the sector remain well placed: the rest of the top 10 is occupied by SUVs of various sizes. Starting with the Volvo XC60 (7th with 314 registrations). It is ahead of two Volkswagens: the T-ROC compact SUV (8th with 297 registrations) and the Tiguan (9th, 295 models). Peugeot completes the top 10 with its 2008, the “adventurous” but “compact” iteration of the 208 which tops the rankings. Technically, the French manufacturer even concludes the “top 12” since the 3008 SUV and the 308 sedan follow closely (279 and 264 registered cars each).
