Freudenberg Hosts German National Hydrogen Council Meeting

Freudenberg hosts the meeting of the German National Hydrogen Council. Freudenberg Performance Materials – the nonwovens specialist of the Freudenberg Group – is hosting a meeting of the German National Hydrogen Council at the Freudenberg headquarters in Weinheim, Germany on September 16.

As the world’s leading supplier of technical textiles, Freudenberg Performance Materials provides fuel cell components for mobility applications and for electrolysers used to produce CO2-free hydrogen.

The German National Hydrogen Council was appointed by the German government and acts as an independent, non-partisan advisory board. The board of directors is currently composed of 25 high-level experts in the fields of economy, science and civil society.

The aim is to support and advise the State Secretaries Committee on Hydrogen in the further development and implementation of Germany’s national hydrogen strategy. Board meetings are moderated by one of the board members to allow the board to deepen its knowledge of relevant technologies, roles and value chain challenges.

Dr. Silke Wagener is a member of the Board of Directors and represents the Freudenberg Technology Group, providing insight into supplier know-how and contributing his decades-long expertise in technology solutions for the hydrogen industry.

Gas Diffusion Layers: Overview of Production and Requirements

During a factory tour for board members, Freudenberg Performance Materials explained the development and production of performance-critical gas diffusion layers made from nonwovens made from carbon fibers for fuel cells and porous transport layers for electrolyzers.

The visit highlighted the potential for improvements from a supplier perspective, such as the need for very timely exchange and collaboration across the value chain.

Functional, uninterrupted and scalable value chains, alongside the development and scale-up of hydrogen infrastructure, are essential prerequisites for the hydrogen industry to fulfill its vital role in the transformation towards climate neutrality.

An exhibition organized jointly by Freudenberg Performance Materials and its sister companies illustrated the contribution that the Freudenberg Group as a whole and its various high-tech components can make to the hydrogen sector and therefore to the energy transition.

About Gas Diffusion Layers and Porous Transport Layers

Gas diffusion layers are one of the main components at the heart of the fuel cell. Their function is to transport gases and liquids into the cells. They have a significant impact on system performance and cost and are essential to the operation of fuel cells.

The same applies to the porous transport layers which are the key component of electrolysers for the CO2-free production of so-called green hydrogen.

Fuel cells combined with green hydrogen are an important technology for CO2-free mobility, especially for buses, trucks and trains. Other uses include stationary applications such as stationary power generation or heat generation in buildings or industry.

In addition to mobility, green hydrogen also plays a key role in the supply of climate-neutral energy in the industrial sector, in particular in the chemical and steel industries.
